Originally this fern is found in the forests of Taiwan and can attach itself to tree stumps and rocks with its rhizomes up to 40 cm long. These are very beautifully hairy and ginger colored. There are hardly any fern species whose leaves are so finely lace-cut as the Araiostegia.
