They like a sheltered spot in the shade or partial shade, preferably in the ditch side, but if the soil is sufficiently moist, they can even tolerate full sun. This fern is extremely hardy (to -30 C) but does die off in winter. This variety has purplish-red leaves that emerge in spring and the stems also turn red.
